Green Schools News

The Walking bus is now back up and running for the new school year. It covers 4 routes around the local area. A big thank you to all our parent "bus drivers" and sixth class leaders!
Ms. Griffin's Second Class are this month's Golden Boot winners; that means they were the best class in the school last month for walking or cycling to school. Well done girls!!
We would like even more girls to cycle to school, where possible. We have decorated our cycle-parking area already and in the next few months, we will be doing a "Broken Bike" survey to see what repairs our girls may need to be done to their bikes. After that, we hope to have a Dr. Bike Day, where all the sick bicycle can have minor repairs done to them….more details to follow!!

What is Green Schools ?
Green Schools is a way of helping schools and children take action on the environment.  Green Schools shows us how to make a difference.  The Green Schools Committee has a job to do.  We have been finding out how St. Eithne's and St. Monica's treat the environment and looking at what we could do better.

that's what saving energy's all about!

Do you have something for our Green School Noticeboard - a poem, a picture, a story or a poster?  Do you have a Green Tip?  Talk to us.

Paper Chase
W
e are trying to cut down the amount of paper we use.  One way to do this is to look at all the photocopying we do.   We are keeping a record every week and hope to see the numbers go down.  Do you know that if we use less paper fewer trees will be cut down and less water used?  An enormous amount of water is used in paper making.  And don't forget - use every page in your copy.

Green Waste
We have thought about how we could reduce waste by composting.  Now that we get fruit at lunchtime we have food waste to dispose of every day.  We got a compost bin from Dublin City Council - and now we think we are going to need another one!  We don't think we are very good at composting, however.  If you can help out we would be very grateful - just get in touch with us.

Wrapper Rage
One of the problems with waste in school is packaging.  Everything delivered to our school seems to come in layer upon layer of cardboard and plastic.  Do you find the same at home?  It fills up our bin, our paper bin and our recycling boxes.  We are going to have to deal with this or we will never reduce the amount of waste we produce.  We'll let you know how we get o
n.

Don't forget to REDUCE, REUSE & RECYCLE

Sticky Stuff
When you are leaving our school look around.  You will be shocked at all the chewing gum on the ground just outside the main door.  This is litter and difficult to clean up.
Please when you finish it just wrap it and bin it.

This is a photo of one of the beds in the garden.
We recently planted these flowers to brighten up the garden.

We made these planters to brighten up the entrance to our school and make it look more welcoming. What do you think?
Don't forget we are collecting mobile phones for recycling so if you have any at home, send them in!
